Hey Everyone!
SHE’S FINISHED! Wahoooooooo!
Man, this has been THE single best RC build of my entire life and boy have I built a lot of cars. Such a fullfilling experience! This car has lived up to all my dreams and expectations from childhood, in fact, its surpassed them! Amazing. Ok, onto the last steps…
So, getting the wheels on, simple, as you’d expect. Next step was getting the electrics in…simple…and hard in equal measures. The servo went in like a dream, no issues there whatsoever. The Spektrum DX3 reciever also went in a like a dream. The Reventon S ESC however proved troublesome. Not in regards to fitting it, that it was easy, from the angle of setting it up. I’m a brushless noob, so found it a real pain in the ass. Its just SOOOOO complex compared to the old school stuff I know. After a quick call with the awesome Modelsport from whom I bought it, they talked me through the basics and we got it set up in minutes. Man, this thing has A LOT of different settings.
Next challenge, and boy was it a challenge, was getting the damn battery in! Its only a HPI 4500mah Nimh, but jeez, talk about a tight fit! Just like the old vintage model. The battery retainer (the bit that has a body pin holding it in) had to be modified heavily to make the battery stay in. The finished article is a little ugly on close inspection, but it stays in place, which is what counts. Word of warning. If you’re sticking in a chunky lipo, please be aware that it may not fit. Space is at a real premium here.
After all the electrics were in and I’d given it a quick test, I set to work on the body painting. With a handful of coats on, it was ready for the decals, my favourite bit!
So, there you have it, the full step by step build of the 2013 re-re Tamiya Egress. Just incredible.
Stay tuned as I’m going to do a couple of videos of this over the next week or so, so that you can see it in action. Awesome!
Mike.

I used a Speed Passion 9.5 (too fast IMO, I'm going back to an old school sport tuned) and haven't used Lipo's I'm afraid so cant comment. Sorry man!

Sorry for a meeeeeeeeeega late reply. I dont use Lipo's so have no idea. I'm too scared of those little bombs to dare use them ;)

What motor did you put in your Egress? I´m thinking about buying one, but I´m not sure about the motor. I´d prefer a brushless 10T or something like that... And what were the problems of installing a LiPo? I have a Duratrax Onyx LiPo Stickpack 7.4V 4200mAh 35C T-Stecker DTXC1960 from my Kyosho Scorpion 2014, do think there is a chance, that it will fit with the Egress? Thanks for this nice blog, I really enjoy it!!!

I've been slowly assembling one of these myself & have looked into some LiPo and LiFe packs... I just measured the space between the upper/lower deck and it looks like 25mm is the max height or thickness for the battery pack. I don't have the length & width yet, but I'll figure that out in the next week or two once I get the rest of the electronics in place.

I know you haven't updated this in a while but I wondered if you'd tried any modern lipo batteries in this and if you can tell what sort of size I need to be looking for? I'm about to order an egress re re and would like to use lipo and brushless in it and race it at the local club.

@9tailsfox - Yeah for sure, many of the parts are interchangeable, but equally, many of them are easily distinguishable as being the 2013 parts rather than vintage. So anyone with a keen (or geeky) eye will spot the new parts a mile off. The plastics, carbon, screws etc are made from different materials so its easy to spot them.

Hey, I wonder Vintage Egress 1989 can share new parts from Egress 2013? thanks

@martin, yeah I hear you on the second set of wheels, although I'd personally advise some 2.2's with more forgiving tyres. These hybrid spikes are super pretty, but brushless almost wipes off those sexy spikes in seconds ;) I've stuck some cheapy DF03 wheels/tyres from Hong Kong. Grip's a bit iffy, but I feel as though I can hammer it a bit, drift and skid for fun without cringing at the tyre wear ;) Regarding decals...time, and lots of it. I spent nigh on 2hrs putting these on as I wanted them to be peeeeeeeeeeeeerfect :) Have fun!

@matman, yeah I think you can give this one more stick than your vintage ;) I've been giving it a good bashing on tarmac, but am yet to take her off road. I think I'll likely wait until summer once the ground has dried up a bit, or take it out in the frost maybe when the ground is rock solid. I just don't fancy getting this baby filthy. My DF03 is for that. That poor beast has been ABUSED. OH, thanks for the comments about the site too, its seeming as though quite a few folks enjoy it from the messages I've been getting of late. Happy you all like it :)

Hey Adam, Well, the entire set wont be usable, but a good percentage of it will. The cars share a lot of the same parts, such as front and rear gearbox casings etc, so you can definitely replace a good number of the screws. I'm guessing Tamiya will start selling a screw set for the Egress as having titanium screws was one of the original cars main selling points. Fingers crossed anyway :)

Silly question. I bought the titanium screw set for the avante 2011, what are the chances it's the same kit for the egress? Is there much difference in the way they bolt together?

Yes !! I have ordered an Egress from towers & now have to wait till it gets here . Two or more weeks As christmas time . I am going to run this hard as it was ment to be , if i can get my other orders . I do have two vintage Egress & one of those are a runner & wow what fun it was to run . So this time , I would like to run this one hard , as i had to light foot the vintage around . BTW!! What a great site & thanks .

@ matman: towerhobbies still has them! @madmike: I feel totally the same! Got one after waiting what felt for ages! Told myself when the Avante got rereleased that when the Egress would be rereleased I would get one. First idea was to ride it, Hard! So i bought a castle creations sidewinder v3 4600KV combo, but now, after opening the box, carefully sanding the carbon edges, gluing the edges, putting the first layers of paint on (I actually went all the way into making it even more beautiful than Tamiya ment it to be: I cut windowmasks, and plan on putting just the right amount of Tamiya 'smoke'-paint on it to just see some detail/LED's inside) I feel totally the same. This car should be driven, but just for the sheer fun of actually seeing it in action in all its 1989 glory. And after these sunny sunday rides, it should be cleaned, loved, and put on the shelf again to be seen! So when available, I will order a second set of wheels and tires to be put on it while running, to have another set for 'the shelf' Last question @MADMIKE: what's your trick in putting those stickers on so tediously tidy??????

Thanks Mat, glad you've enjoyed the build posts! I know your feeling with the Avante, the 2011 I bought is still unbuilt and that's down solely to me know wanting to abuse the NIB perfection ;) I bought myself a new built 2011 though, and that just needs finishing off (was about 90% built when I got it) and then that will also be a runner. I'm going to run this Egress and my intention was to run it hard, go off-road, get it mucky and abuse it...but now this perfect little thing is in-front of me, I just cant do it lol. Run it I will, but abuse it? I just can't. I'm going to use this in the the same way car collectors run their old vintage sports cars, on sunny days, not in the rain and keep them perfectly clean...and not ragging it too hard ha haaa. Good luck hunting one down! Mike.

But i know how you feel , you have spent all of this time too get it right & now you DON'T want to get it dirty . as this is where i am with my Avante 2011 , Yes i know it's sad . So the better option is build another one  ... Why not :D . Thanks for your time & effort , i have enjoyed the hole thing . Just wish i can get my hands on some .
